If you are visiting Juneau, hiking to Ice caves should be on your to-do list. Ice caves are intimidating. When you are in an ice cave, there is a magnificent glacier on top of your head. West Glacier Trailhead is one of the ultimate day hikes in Juneau with spectacular views of Mendenhall Glacier, Nugget fall and an awesome reward of Ice Caves.
There are many guided tours available on the internet for this hike costing between ($150 – $200), but we decided to hike on our own. I have listed everything you need to know that will help you to plan your own adventure.
Prior Hiking Experience – You should have basic experience of hiking before you try this trail on your own. The first 2 miles are easy and pleasant as you cross moss covered trees and wildflowers. The next two miles gets interesting as the trail has a couple of switchbacks. You will find stairs with cable on the side for support, rock climbing with rope (the rope was already there to help the hikers) & water streams.
- Water Stream & Moss
- Rock Climbing on the trail
Transportation to Trailhead – City bus & local taxi can drop you at the West Glacier Trailhead. We were late to start for our hike, so we took a taxi. Otherwise, I would suggest taking the city bus (schedule readily available on the internet) or you can ask at the city bus stop.
Unclear Trail Markings – The trail does not have clear directions for Ice Caves. At one point, the trail splits and instead of going up the mountain, we had to go down. A small pink ribbon is tagged on a bush which is very easy to miss if you are not looking for it. Always ask people on the trail about the trail condition or any other valuable piece of information. I have also posted a picture of the spot where the trail splits.
- This is where the trail splits and we have to go down following the pink ribbon markings.
The Last Mile – The last mile is extremely strenuous with no paved path. The ice caves are at the bottom of the mountain and we had to go all the way on gravel and black ice. We tried all tricks to reach the bottom (sitting down, sliding on the butt and whatnot). Never try to walk on black ice as it may sink.
- Mendenhall Glacier behind me. The unpaved path with no markings
- Bottom of the mountain & end of the trail
Hiking Essentials – Below items are must have for this trail.
- Good Hiking boots
- Rain jacket, waterproof bag packs
- Clothing layers, Woolen gloves, caps & socks.
- Food & water
- Easy to carry First Aid kit
Hiking Reward – After three hours of hiking we were finally reached Ice caves (people also call it the mouth of the glacier). Ice Cave is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Crystal blue color with beautiful patterns inside. It was an amazing moment to be in Ice caves (felt like we really earned to be there). We spent about 30-45 minutes and then headed back.
- Beautiful blue pattern Ice Caves
- Final Destination
Time to Hike – It was a 10-mile hike (round trip). Expect to spend 6-8 hours on the trail.
Cost – As we were late to start our hike, we took a taxi to West Glacier Trailhead (35-37$ approx. one way). You can also take city bus (2.5$ one way)
